Bio / Contact

Lisa Marie Spatola is a practicing artist and passionate educator based in Royal Oak, Michigan. Lisa Marie grew up in New Jersey before attending the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in painting (2013) and her MAT (2014). Teaching high school art for over a decade has not stopped her from learning new things in the classroom everyday. Lessons from the classroom inspire creative experiments at home and vice versa. In her home studio, Lisa Marie continues to paint large square canvases as well as small format paper based works and cards. Right now she is developing an LMS ART CRD series as a way to share more handmade art.

Artist Statement

My art practice is a reflection of my experience as a human, artist and educator.

I teach my students to embrace the gifted mistakes in their work. I use paint and drawing media to help me document, reflect, research, process, and learn from my human experience.

While most of my recent works are abstractions, I would not categorize myself as an abstract artist. Ideas create form and my current work explores the dynamics of order and chaos. Gestural abstraction serves to represent the unpredictable elements of nature or that which is out of our control. Geometric structures manufacture order and control. I employ both in a fruitless attempt to capture the wild and organize the spontaneous. I enjoy exploring the visual contrast of these two forces. Creating this work helps me process experiences in my own life that are out of my control. It is also a reminder of the control we do have in our response to life’s chaos.
